How to wildcamp

Let me start off by talking about the most important when it comes to wildcamping.

Camping and parking are two different things.

We can park our van pretty much anywhere (unless there’s a sign saying otherwise, of course) but we can not camp everywhere.

So what is the difference between parking and camping?

If we park our van, we are parked. Simple. And we can sleep in our parked van.
If we take stuff out, our rug or chairs – then we are camping.

Another thing you have to be aware of is, that not all countries will allow you to sleep in your van (no, not even if you’re just “parked”) – The Netherlands are one of those countries.

How do you find all the good remote places?

Park4Night is your friend, you will hear me referrence to this app many many times. It is the app we use the most.

You go into your P4N (Park4Night) app, and in the right top corner you put in your filters.
I like to reset it, so I make sure that I have no filters on beforehand.

Now one of my filters that I like to put on, are the ratings. I like to make sure we, as a family, are safe – and I do that by making sure the place we sleep has great ratings, so I want my rating to be higher or equal to 4 stars.

We like to park away from cities, so I look on the map where there is green terrain. I will often look for the tree symbols as they mean “close to nature” but I also always check the P symbols.

I always read what the four newest rating says, I often look away from ratings made a year or two ago as so much can happen in a year or two (unless the relate to the the newer comments of course)

Which countries are great for wildcamping?

We have been to most countries in Europe, a bit of Africa and a bit of Asia.

By the experience we have had, almost any country we’ve been to has been great for wildcamping. Türkiye and Greece were amazing. Italy, Portugal and Spain has been pretty easy too.

Okay so which countries were difficult?

We found Morocco to be a little tricky, you have to pay for most places. It’s really cheap to pay for these places though and it’s really cheap to stay at campgrounds too so that’s nice.

We’ve found that the coast of France was somewhat hard to find spot because they usually have a height barrier.

Croatia is known as a country that doesn’t allow wild camping, we haven’t been there yet but I have heard that it’s tricky.
