Exploring Norway: A Perfect Itinerary
Norway, with its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage, offers an unforgettable experience. If you’re planning a trip to Norway, this itinerary covers a mix of natural wonders and intriguing attractions.
This route can be done in a week, in 10 days, in 2,5 weeks – the longer you take the less you drive everyday so it depends on how much you’d like to drive everday.
However I have written this blog post as a 7 day itinerary as most of my followers on instagram ask for a 7 day itinerary.
Day 1: Science and Innovation in Oslo
– Morning: Kick off your adventure at the Oslo Science Center. This interactive museum is perfect for families and science enthusiasts. We personally liked the 1st floor the best (the 1st floor is located in the basement!) The first floor is the floor that has the most interactive exhibitions.
– Afternoon: After exploring the center, take a stroll through Oslo’s vibrant city center. Visit the nearby Vigeland Sculpture Park or the Akershus Fortress for a taste of Oslo’s artistic and historical side.
Day 2: Mystical Caves and Natural Wonders
– Morning: Drive to Mikaelshulen, a fascinating cave with historical significance and a touch of mystery. This ancient site, used for centuries, offers a glimpse into Norway’s past.
The cave is named after Saint Michael, a key figure in Christian tradition known for his role as a protector and warrior against evil. The dedication to Saint Michael suggests that the cave was considered a holy place, likely associated with miracles and divine protection. Inside Mikaelshulen, you will find traces of a small chapel and an altar.
– Afternoon: Head to Giant’s Kettle (Jettegrytene), a unique geological formation. These large, smooth holes carved by glacial movements provide an excellent spot for photography and exploring. Make sure to bring your swimsuit as you can slide down on them like a waterslide!
Day 3: History and Local Flavors
– Morning Travel to Dalen, a quaint village known for its historic Dalen Hotel, often called the “fairytale hotel” due to its beautiful architecture. You can either take a tour and learn about the region’s history or you can find a hike or simply just enjoy the beautiful sight of Dalen. This is one of my favorite places as the nature here is stunning!
I suggest these three hikes:
1. Eidsborg Stave Church and Vindlausloftet
Distance: Approximately 2 km (round trip)
Difficulty: Easy
Description: This hike starts from Dalen and takes you to the historical Eidsborg Stave Church, one of the best-preserved stave churches in Norway. The trail is well-marked and relatively flat, making it suitable for children. Along the way, you can explore Vindlausloftet, a medieval wooden building, and enjoy the beautiful countryside views.
2. Rui Trail (Rui-plassen)
Distance: Approximately 4 km (round trip)
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Description: The Rui Trail is a charming path that leads to the Rui farm, offering splendid views of the Dalen Valley and Bandak Lake. This trail is a bit steeper in sections but still manageable for kids with some hiking experience. The hike offers a glimpse into traditional Norwegian farm life and has plenty of scenic spots for a family picnic.
3. Ravnejuv Viewpoint
Distance: Approximately 1.5 km (round trip)
Difficulty: Easy
Description: The hike to Ravnejuv Viewpoint is short and easy, suitable for even the youngest hikers. The trail leads to a stunning viewpoint over the Tokke River, where you can marvel at the dramatic cliffs and the surrounding landscape. This trail is particularly enjoyable in the late spring and summer months when the flora is in full bloom.
If you decide not to hike then spend your Afternoon like this: Stop by Nansen Bakery for a taste of local Norwegian pastries and bread. This charming bakery is perfect for a relaxing afternoon snack as it has some incredible views to mountains and a lake. It is my favorite bakery!
However it closes at 4 pm, so keep that in mind.
Day 4: Majestic Waterfalls
If you didn’t do the hike and visited Nansen bakery on day 3, then skip ignore the “visit Nansen bakery”
– Morning: Start your morning out with some delicious pastries from Nansens Bakery, take in the beautiful scenery!
Afterwards drive to Espelandsfossen, a spectacular waterfall located in the region of Hardanger. The serene environment and the roar of the waterfall make it a perfect spot for nature lovers.
– Afternoon: Drive to Skjervefossen, another breathtaking waterfall. This hike is a 2 km roundtrip hike. This site is equipped with walking paths and viewing platforms, making it accessible for all visitors.
´
Day 5: a Bergen Hike
– Morning: Drive to Bergen and embark on a hike in the Lysekloster area. The trails offer stunning views of the fjords and countryside, from above.
The hike is marked as “hard” as it does get pretty steep at times, however its also marked as family friendly. Its well worth it and we did it with a 4 year old.
At the start of the hike you’ll find a ruin from a monastery where your kids can run around while you take in the history.
Day 6: Spectacular Views and Water Falls
– Morning: Visit Vøringfossen, one of Norway’s most famous waterfalls. With a drop of nearly 182 meters, it’s a sight to behold. Take your time to walk around the area and enjoy the different viewpoints.
– Afternoon: End your day at King’s View (Krokkleiva), an outstanding lookout point offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It’s an ideal spot for photography and reflection on your journey.
Day 7: Departure
– Morning: Depending on your departure time, spend your last morning in Norway soaking in the local culture, maybe with a leisurely breakfast at a local café.
– Afternoon: Prepare for your departure.
Tips for a Smooth Trip
– Transportation: Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore these destinations. Ensure you have a good map or GPS for navigation.
– Accommodation: Book accommodations in advance, especially in smaller towns and popular tourist spots.
– Weather: Norwegian weather can be unpredictable. Pack layers and waterproof gear to stay comfortable.
This 7-day itinerary offers a balanced mix of scientific exploration, historical sites, natural wonders, and local culture. Enjoy your Norwegian adventure!
